Resting by khurafati
Warkaris taking a break and resting at the ghats. Shot during 'Waari' . A holy pilgrimage in Maharastra, where millions of people, mostly farmers walk for 15-20 days and cover over 400 kms. They carry musical instruments and sing devotional songs all the way during their journey.

From the series 'Mauli' I shot last year for Revati Malati.

I was standing right in the middle of a wave of people coming towards me. When I pointed my camera towards this lady she adjusted her saree to cover her head properly, and I got this shot. One of my personal faves from the series, as I got all details of the patched blouse made out of cutouts from different coloured clothes, a hint of the tattoo and her ornaments, also the texture of her skin.

An out-take from the shoot 'Mauli' for Revati Malati.
The rugged Indian outfit by khurafati
The rugged Indian outfit
In rural places this is one of the most common outfit, a turban with white kurta and dhoti combined with a black shoe. Men usually sport a mustache or beard. The whites take on a character with time depending on the work these men do, and the shoes have a zillion stories to tell with all the stitches, crumples and worn out soles. These men are skinny but they are rugged and real workhorses.

Steaming hot tea at Badabazar by khurafati
Steaming hot tea at Badabazar
Kolkata is famous for its street food and is BIG on tea. The tea is made on a 'chulha' (coal stove), the smoke and ash from it adds on to the flavour of the tea. It is then served in an earthen pot locally known as 'kulhad', which again adds on to the flavour and smell, also the overall experience.
Rice plantation by khurafati
Rice plantation
I spent a few days in the fields photographing the farmers during rice plantation. The ladies sang this to bless me for my future endeavors.    Really fortunate to meet such kind and humble people in my journey.
I had been to Kashmir in 2010, and I photographed a few kids up in the mountains. Life in the mountains is tough, and none of the kids I met, got an opportunity to goto a school. They were very curious and wanted to know where I came from and why was I taking photographs. This is the 1st photo I clicked… and when I showed her the picture, this was the reaction…  That the probably the 1st time she saw her photograph, all her friends were jumping all around me to get their pictures clicked! I promised myself, that someday I would do something for the education of these wonderful kids in Kashmir. I started researching and came across this school in Breswana. Their Facebook page… I was in touch with the
Director of the school for all these years, but I could never save much to make it back to the mountains. Recently I saw a post for a volunteer opening on their page and immediately got in touch with them. After a skype call I was selected. I will be there from August till October end.

Looking forward to finally doing my bit and share my knowledge with the kids :)
